Merchant Ivory romantic epic set during the British Raj where an Englishwoman and an Indian nobleman share an illicit romance. Her grand-niece (Julie Christie) traces her story in the present day and has her own experiences in modern India. Like the other Merchant Ivory pictures, it looks nice and the acting is good. Although it may be too deliberately paced for its own.
