We Were Strangers

Politics aside, it's more boring than strange.

Probably director John Huston's most overlooked movie, 'We Were Strangers' proved a disappointment with postwar audiences due to its dark subject matter. The focus is on a group of revolutionary minded Cubans decide to assassinate an unpopular leader to incite the masses.
Now there was an actual revolt in 1933 Cuba and the topic of assassination can be made interesting instead of uncomfortable. But few of the characters onscreen are themselves interesting enough for viewers to get past that. Ironically the most entertaining performance is from Pedro Armendariz as the swarthy government hitman who soon obsessively falls for Jennifer Jones (who does look nice but isn't good here). John Garfield does his best and would have made the better actor in this with a better script.
The screenplay does try to examine the moral implications of a political assassination and delve into the psychological effect the planning and execution has on one's state of mind.
