Kidnapped (1960)

Uneven and dour period drama - by Disney?

'Kidnapped' (1960) is definitely one of the lesser live-action adventures that Disney produced in bulk during the 1950s and 60s; the crowning achievement being '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' (1954) of course. The atmosphere and action scenes aren't bad but the acting is corny and ott even for a family matinee adventure movie of this time. James MacArthur is wooden as the lead but Peter Finch easily steals the movie as the swashbuckling rogue Alan Breck Stewart. Modern audiences, especially children, might be put off by the surprisingly grim tone (a child gets murdered off-screen by a drunk pirate) and the emphasis on political intrigue that they might not understand. For a more serious minded feature film with a different studio at the helm, it might have worked. But as a Disney movie? It just seems odd.
