The Contender (2000)

Accidentally predicts Obama's nominee success.

Although 'The Contender' does demonstrate a cloying self-assured naivete that liberals like myself are often guilty, and will doubtlessly chafe some viewers, it still remains thrilling political drama that retains its relevance thanks to crafting its political message as not a question of partisanship but rather upholding the value of the right to privacy and personal opinion. It sets this against dangerously media-savvy politicians and amoral insiders that are led by Gary Oldman who sports a most hideous hairstyle in his role. Joan Allen is the target of a vicious smear campaign by Oldman and his cronies while she is also a candidate for vice president for a flailing administration. The cast of heavy hitters includes Jeff Bridges, Christian Slater, Sam Elliot, William Petersen, Saul Rubinek, and Philip Baker Hall. Incidentally it's almost entirely men making up the cast but Joan Allen's character leaves a strong impression as she reluctantly takes on a symbolic role as the female politician poised against her will to shatter an odious double standard.
