From Here to Eternity

Yes that poster's cliche but the movie's good.

One of the quintessential Hollywood romance movies. From Here to Eternity actually devotes more time to the psychological underpinnings that stems from each of the main characters' unhappiness and how they deal with it. The cast is great and includes Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift, Donna Reed, and a scene-stealing Frank Sinatra. There's even some action in the plot with a climactic recreation of the attack on Pearl Harbor (it's set in WW2). The script is laid-back and devotes a lot of attention to the characters' relationships, their anxieties, and their aspirations. There are some great shots of the Hawaiian scenery and by the end credits, the film is bold enough to end on a bittersweet note and convince the audience to be fine with that.
