Robin Who?

This was the most expensive Robin Hood movie yet. So naturally, it's the worst one yet as well. On paper this sounded good and hell, the trailers were convincing enough to get me in a theater seat. Unfortunately it's a dull, ugly, joyless, and massively uneven affair that cannot decide whether it wants to be a historical epic or a swashbuckling adventure.
Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett both look bored; they've done these types of roles to death. The cast is wasted with the exceptions of the villains, played by Mark Strong and Oscar Isaac. These guys are having so much fun and are so interesting to watch, you wish the movie was about them instead.
Ironically, I do believe that was the original intent. See, Ridley Scott had planned a movie telling the story of Robin Hood from the Sheriff of Nottingham's point of view. What happened to that during the development phase, I have no idea. Instead we are saddled with another seemingly obligatory rehash of a familiar property but with none of the heart or even the entertainment value of previous efforts. It's entirely on auto-pilot and it makes no effort to demonstrate otherwise.
