Pirates of the Caribbean is so far the best adventure film series of the new millenium, and one of the all time greatest produced. If you have not seen it, immediately move it into your queue, and I hope you have a wonderful time experiencing it. You may be asking yourself, "Why do I claim 'Pirates' as one of the greatest?" It is much more than just the film itself. The film defied so many perceived barriers standing in its way. For example, 1: Based on Disney ride causing some moviegoers to groan, 2: Long title which some execs believe to be a "curse." And the irony of "curse" in the title, 3: The teaming of the names Johnny Depp with Disney and/or Jerry Bruckheimer. It is this last "perception" (3) I want to share with you. I was excited to see this movie because of Depp and seeing a pirate movie. I listened to people say that Depp had sold out working with Disney and Bruckheimer, concentrating on big budget instead of independent work. Let me tell you, Depp actually marries these two. Yes, it is big budget, but Depp brings his "independent" skill to this movie. Depp is what makes this one of the greatest. If you want to use Bruckheimer as an example, never before in one of his pictures have I seen actors really bring a unique screen persona to the adventure. Yes, Cage was funny in The Rock, Will Smith was solid in Enemy of the State, but their characters do not come alive like Captain Jack Sparrow. See this movie just for the joy of watching Johnny Depp change the look and feel of a contemporary adventure yarn. The rest is all frosting on the cake. And that frosting is loaded with other great actors and pure fun fun fun and an extra order of fun.
