Equity
Boring "Cable Movie"
1.5/4 stars

'Equity' is another recent film concerned with the current state of Wall Street and the shady dealings that go on behind closed doors. Most of these types of films can become convoluted when explaining all the ins-and-outs of Wall Street and banking. 'Equity' manages to make all of the necessary dump of money-handling jargon understandable within the confines of the plot. I was completely able to follow along, despite having no knowledge about the subject matter outside of watching similar films. All of this is done so in a very believable 'real-world' sense. This is how I would imagine these events playing out in reality. The cast is filled with capable actors. The downside to the few strong positives lies in the story/direction. I couldn't have been less engaged with these characters or their goals. Not one single character is worth following. They all operate solo behind everyone else to achieve a personal conflicting agenda. There's never a sense of consequence or stakes to the proceedings. It all feels completely pedestrian. The story has no resolution at all for these people. None of them seem to be truly affected by the situation, other than feeling betrayed by certain individuals. A few scenes hint at the film's true intent to show women in powerful money handling positions, attempting a positive gender outlook. However, this well intended message is wasted when all of these females are shown to be selfish career boosting egotists. The manner in which the film is directed is more likened to a mundane cable movie. And I mean MUNDANE. The slow pace, coupled with never-ending static conversation shots, and complete lack of investing character/story, make the end result a boring endeavor.
