Don't Breathe
Best Thriller of the Year!
4/4 stars

'Don't Breathe' is the followup from the team behind the 2013 'Evil Dead' remake. The creative minds at work have surpassed their previous efforts and delivered the single best thriller of the year! We jump right into a simple streamlined story of three home invading youths who make a habit of looting houses. Their next target is meant to be their last, as the home owner has over 3K in bills stashed in his place. Oh, and he's also a blind recluse. The setup is quick and informative. We aren't meant to completely side with these criminals, but we are given enough reason to warm up to their characters when the situation goes sour. And that happens almost immediately. Not only is our blind man hardened and apt to violence, but he's also hiding a secret within the depths of his living quarters that changes our whole perception of him. Lang is an imposing frightening figure in the way he physically embodies this bulking sad man. These strengths in character early on are what keep us locked in during the high stakes danger that is continuously thrown at us. Once this movie starts, it NEVER stops. It is a rush from beginning to end! Each tense moment builds on the one before it. Survival is threatened every second. The thieves, and blind man, put each other into dire consequence at every turn. Tight plotting keeps the action moving forward at all times and the logic of the characters within believable reason. It's because of all of these factors that the tensity maintains a high level for the entire duration. We are given merely seconds to catch our breath, and only a few times. I was more involved and on edge than I can remember being during any recent thriller/horror film. This is the kind of movie in which theatrical viewing enhances the experience by way of evoking a great amount of reactionary response. 'Don't Breathe' delivers all the thrills, close-calls, shocks, and audience satisfaction you could ask for in a thriller. It's a TON of fun to watch!
