Kubo and the Two Strings
Creative, Original Masterwork of Animation
3.5/4 stars

'Kubo and the Two Strings' is Laika studio's most visually impressive film to date. Stop-motion animation is taken to new highs. The advancements in this realm of animation make 'Kubo' stand out as a masterwork of specific craft. Laika have really pushed the limits with this one. A gorgeous array of unique character and set designs call to mind the aesthetic of anime cinema. Elements of that genre are at play, but it's melded in a way which sees the film carve out it's own identity. It has universal appeal through the simple, yet very effective, fairy tale action/adventure story. A deft balance of comedy, tragedy, thrills, and wonderment are seamlessly integrated into a touching story of a young hero's journey. A creative plot offers up continuous imaginative sequences of unpredictable nature. The characters are vastly entertaining, offering great interplay towards their differing personalities. Stellar voice work aids in this area. My only criticisms would be in regards to the (mostly unseen) villain. His motivations were unclear and the final bout that the whole film had been building up to lost some of it's substantial means because of this. The tender way in which the conflict resolves is rather touching, however. It offsets the use of straight-forward action nicely. Messages concerning grievance, parental care, and family legacy are present. The takeaway from these isn't deeply felt, but their inclusion does add to the experience. 'Kubo and the Two Strings' is a highly enjoyable film for all ages. This is the type of original family-oriented entertainment that we should be receiving on a regular basis!
