Pete's Dragon (2016)
A Boy and His Dragon
3/4 stars

'Pete's Dragon' is the best live-action Disney remake by a large margin. What this iteration does best is that it takes the concept of a boy having a green colored pet dragon and spins an entirely different story all-together. The similarities between this update and the original begin and end with a boy and a dragon. And, in all honesty, I believe this to be the superior film. It seems just a tiny bit unfair to make that claim, seeing as how they are different in almost every way, but I'm going with it. 'Pete's Dragon' (2016) is essentially your typical 'boy and his dog' story. The companionship is felt between the two at all times. It's established early on the first scenes with use of very little dialogue. Their interactions feel natural, like how a boy and his pet would act together in real life. But this pet is also his sudo-parent/guardian. Their bond is what holds the film together and makes the many emotional moments ring true. There's very little plot present. The story unfolds naturally with a soft childlike perspective. Rarely is there ever a scene that doesn't involve Pete, his dragon, or both. All the characters are likable. Even the man who ends up "hunting" the dragon isn't made out to be a villain. We totally understand his reasoning for wanting obtain the beast. He himself doesn't have any plans besides riding the notoriety of being the man who caught the elusive creature. The ending brings all of the characters together in a satisfying manner. A bittersweet resolution leads to a final scene that retains the wonder bestowed at the beginning. Perfect film to take your small children to. The kids in my theater were completely enamored. More remakes like this, Disney! Please and thank you.
