Gods of Egypt

Overblown CG Nonsense

'Gods of Egypt' is an overblown, tedious onslaught of terrible CG (and acting) trying to pass itself off as an epic "sword and sandals" fantasy adventure. The godawful effects are so noticeable that I was assured no engagement from the beginning. Having a massive budget should've ensured this huge oversight from happening. The entire movie screams "green screen" to the point of annoyance. But that's only one of the main problems. Storytelling is almost nonexistent. What should be a simple journey of reclamation turns into a sprawling plot full of nonsensical encounters and unintelligible reasonings for most characters. The heroes jump from place to place, only to showcase one crappy looking set-piece after another. All of the heroes' meandering adds up to just being filler for a two (plus) hour runtime. All of the actors are doing their worst, especially Butler, who is wasted in a villain role. I began the movie as a riffing commentator on it's flaws, but by the end I had grown tired of it's incompetence and sunk in the boredom.
