Z for Zachariah

A for Awesome

'Z for Zachariah' is an intimately compelling drama set in post apocalyptic times. All of the usual routine (often nonsensical) detailed accounts of a world made uninhabitable and a society rebuilding from the ashes is done away with here. This film contains only three characters, and it focuses solely on the way in which their varying personalities are forced to coincide. Quietly, and slowly, we dive into these people as they develop different thoughts and feelings toward one another. Their conflicting ideologies about life and religious affairs fuels drama at first. But it's when the third player enters that the tension rises. The threesome dynamic brings up many facets of basic human flaws when balancing emotions during the establishment of new relationships. It's explored in a fascinatingly understated manner. The three actors are absolutely terrific. Their strong performances compliment the intriguing morality examination of the story. Ambiguity surrounds the film, most notably in the finale. I thought it fit perfectly, giving us no right or wrong, only showing us what is and what could be. It makes for great conversation afterward.
