Inside Out (2015)

Keep Your Emotions in Check

Pixar has really outdone themselves with 'Inside Out'. It's absolutely fantastic in every way! The initial concept is the definition of originality, and the execution of it is ingenious! This is the type of creative storytelling that I crave. The motive of the film is to explore the most basic and relatable emotional changes that everyone goes through in their childhood years. I was very impressed with just how deep, psychologically, that exploration takes us. There is no area left unchecked. We see the inner workings of the human mind visualized in a cartoon environment, while simultaneously watching the affects they have on the 'real-world' actions of the human characters. It literally is an 'inside out' examination. The individual representations of the emotions are great fun to watch. Each one is their own fleshed out character with personalities tailored to their corresponding emotion, never becoming a schtick or cliche. This leads to many situations involving thoughtful insight, sharp humor, and a multitude of clever visual gags. All of it flows naturally through the excellent story. Narratively, the whole piece is controlled by the emotions of the human characters. It presents a common shared experience that would give any child mixed feelings, which in turn creates chaos for the emotions. This sends Joy and Sadness into a time-sensitive adventure that parallels with the growing difficulty of the real-world situation. It's through their eventual teamwork that the theme of the movie shines so bright. I won't give it away. This is an important life lesson for kids and it's something that they will understand and appreciate as much as the adults who've already experienced it. 'Inside Out' is the best example of a movie that can be accessible to all ages, genders, and cultures. It accurately portrays the most relatable human qualities, all while being a fun, thoughtful, and surprisingly deep emotional experience. Very rarely do I ever see a film that gives me everything I could've wanted from it.
