Horns

Perfect Genre Blender

'Horns' is a pleasant surprise. The sheer quality in filmmaking, moderate big studio budget, and broad appeal has me wondering why this film did not receive a wide release. It totally deserves the viewership. I don't think I've ever seen a film that has so many genres coinciding perfectly. The story is easy to fall right into and the characters even easier to absorb. The narrative weaves together a crime-mystery plot with strong elements of horror, spiritual, drama, comedy, and tragic romance. I ran through the gambit of all emotions and I was invested in the relationships, as well as solving the initial case. There's a touching aspect to the romance that is the beating heart of the whole film. It becomes more present over time, making for a satifying conclusion. I only have two minor complaints. The reasoning for the main character growing horns is not explained and creates slight confusion when the spiritualness of his lost love becomes prevalent to the story. Also, the final confrontation between him and the true murderer could've been more dire. Other than that, this is a great gem that hopefully will get more viewings in the near future.
