Obvious Child

An 'Obvious' Recommendation

I hesitate to label 'Obvious Child' as a 'romantic comedy'. The story is one that seems to fit into that category, but the film tells it in such a way that completely deviates from the typical formula. The characters are often relatable and the outcome of the situations lean in slight towards realism. Natural awkwardness shines through Jenny Slate's performance. I laughed along with her and understood her pains. The comedy comes out of the dramatic situations, much like how Slate's character gets her stand-up routines from events in her personal life. The jokes are a mixed bag. I didn't laugh much at the few stand-up segments, but I did enjoy some unexpected humor amongst the quieter moments. I like the route this story takes. It goes to a couple of areas most in this genre do not, and it feels more personal in doing so. A pleasing watch that earns it's positive outcome.
