I never made the transition to the 'Beyond' series, after watching the original animated series (which I love). But I did find that gap easier bridged by this film. Continuity between the two series are combined into one story here and it flows well. The detective element is still present and the mystery behind the circumstances is well thought out. I was legitimately surprised by the twists. This is another good animated Batman film that any fan should definitely check out.
