Rob Gordon is a Chicago record store owner who is not very lucky with the ladies. In this film he sets out to see why this is, after being recently dumped by his latest girlfriend Laura. John Cusack does a great job as Rob, portraying a critical guy just trying to get his life together. Although Cusack does a great job, the supporting cast is what makes this film. I think everyone who has ever had a retail job in their 20s or 30s knows somebody like Rob’s co-workers (Louiso and Black). This was the first movie I remember seeing Jack Black in, and it still remains my favorite. He delivers each of his hysterical lines perfectly. Louiso plays a perfect straight guy to Black’s craziness. The one downfall was Iben Hjejle as Laura. She didn’t do a bad job in the film, but something about her performance bothers me and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Anyone who is a music fan or who has had bad luck when it comes to relationships will appreciate this film.
