It's the movie that put Tom Cruise on the map, Top Gun (1986) would make him a star. Just 20 years old and fresh out of high school, even at this early stage in his career you could see the Cruise charm shining through in that smirk.

The movie takes a satirical look at the boy who has everything, but in reality has nothing. The most telling scene in the film, not the most famous that would be the lip-synching scene to the Bob Seger classic Old Time Rock and Roll, is when Cruise is sitting around playing cards with his friends (Bronson Pinchot pre-Perfect Strangers and the actor who would go on to play Booger in Revenge of the Nerds), and the question is asked, something to the extent of, "Why do you want to go to college?" Everyone's answer is money! This is a great example of the excess of the 80's, which was yet to come. He comes from a strict household that cares more about possessions that real relationships.

So, What the Heck, see the film
