One of the biggest flops of 2013 (so far) is also by far the best action movie I’ve seen this year so far. Sure it’s no Die Hard, but it was a heck of a lot better then A Good Day to Die Hard.
It can be cheesy sometimes, but it’s not bad. Besides; everyone enjoys indulging in something cheesy now and again. That’s always how I like my action flicks big, silly and cheesy (but not stupid, there is a difference,) and this movie doesn’t disappoint. It’s not really a proper action movie without a few goofy one-liners.
Just look at last years The Grey. I wouldn’t even consider that an action flick, its way to serious, and not nearly stylized enough. Fun Action movies are meant to be set up not unlike comedies, write a comedy, replace every other joke with an action set piece and, whamo, you have yourself a fun action movie. That’s part of what made classic action movies like Die Hard, Predator and Terminator so fun to watch, they were both incredibly violent while at the same time being, at there core, ridiculous, so you could enjoy the violence instead of wincing at it.
Of course that’s not all you need for a decent action flick, you also, despite what many producers seem to think, need a likable protagonist (or protagonists) and a despicable villain. The Last Stand has both of these things, after all who is more loveable then Arnold Schwarzenegger? He’s like a muscle bound teddy bear that can kick your a$$. Then in the end when he finally beats that arrogant jerk-antagonist it is so emotionally satisfying. This movie really does have all the makings of an entertaining action flick, and I hope it has a bigger life on DVD then it had in the theater.
I just don’t understand why anybody could dislike this movie. If you’re looking for a decent man-movie or just have nostalgia for classic 80’s action flicks I would definitely recommend the Last Stand.
