Why this wasn't one of the nominated best films of 2011 i dont know? Then again most of the times the fine people employed at The Academy Of Motion Arts offices don't seem to know their ass from a hole in the ground! Gerald Butler puts in a powerful performance as Sam Childers a recently released convict who as soon as he is out on parole it's not long before he is up to no good again. He then finds God. In an effort to redeem himself he relocates temporarily to the Sudan/Africa where he builds homes through a christianity group learning along the way about the tragedies on families amongst small villages in the Sudan inflicted by LRA leader Joseph Kony whose majority of his militia was put together by stealing small children from their familes in the middle of the night. Turning the female children into prostitutes for the adult members of his militia and turning the boys into his armed killers.

Sorry the storyline is what is i cannot pretty it up for you. It's not long before Childers builds his own church in the Sudan which covers as an orphanage to save as many children they can from Kony's grasp. When i hear a movie i am currently watching is based on true events and i take enough interest in it, what i do is investigate on the web the actual events that took place. Where Hollyweird usually stretches the truth this wasnt the case with 'Machinegun Preacher' as i was reading a piece in Christianity Today that goes on to say that Childers as of 2011 has been neglecting his duties at the orphanage/church leaving many Sudanese children either starving or sick with little and no medical supplies. Childers denies this of coarse putting the full blame to the lack of care on the Sudanese offical he hired to watvh things whilst going back and forth from the US.

I hope what i have read in fact is not true Sam as i fell in love with your story watching this film and feel a bit more relieved knowing that you are out there maybe preventing yet another ruthless attack by the LRA rebel known as Kony. A fantastic film!
