Certified Copy ( Copie conforme )

Copy versus the original

The value of a copy versus the original work of art... Copie conforme is an 80% talking movie, which I like this kind of movie, but it is not as good as I had hoped. As good as Before Sunrise, I think. But I loved Before Sunset and that is what I had hoped for. This was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Canes and is thought of very highly. That was my motivation for watching it, along with the dialogue and scenery. Their roles were undefined for me at some moments but I was fine with that hanging on for everything to wrap up in the end. It left me hanging with the final scene but not in a bad way. I like Juliette Binoche who won Best Actress for this at Canes, but I was not satisfied with her performance here. Maybe there was not enough emotion for me to like her more. I liked William Shimell a lot more than her. I got a kick out of Jean-Claude Carrière's character and the tour of the Italian village of Lucignano. This for me was much more a thinking movie than a feel good, a feel bad or indifferent affair. Maybe I needed to drink a lot of red wine to enjoy it.
