Count Yorga, Vampire

Suck up to this one!

Another surprise! What a great little 70's horror pic, a cut above others being produced at the time.

"Count Yorga, Vampire" is funny in all the right places and horrific in all the right places, somehow making a standard story seem original. There are even some decent scares, primitive though they may be. It's completely entertaining.

Taking place during an era when doctors smoked during examinations and still made house calls when their patients have been drained of blood, "Count Yorga, Vampire" still has a hip vibe, even today. The normal progression from disbelief to acceptance of the supernatural is believable, particulary in our protagonists' debate over involving the police, whose eventual reaction proves that some things never change.

Robert Quarry makes a suave vampire, and again, a beliveable one, especially during a time when a little bloodsucking was probably not the craziest thing going on.

Skin Rating = 2 (out of 4). Believe it or not, under the 70's hair and clothing there are actually some hot bodies. Especially that of Paul (a young Michael Murphy) as he cavorts with his soon-to-be vampire girlfriend.
