Too much story or no story?

Come on, everybody. "Southland Tales" is not as awful as you say.
Yeah, its interesting pieces don't add up to an entertaining whole, but you've got to cut a little slack for the genius who gave us "Donnie Darko".
I guess I don't understand the word "pretentious" in regards to this film. I mean, I don't think the writer-director was purposely trying to show off and I think there's some method to his madness. He suffered from a failure in execution.
Some parts I even flatout liked. For example, I don't know how or why he got so many Saturday Night Live people involved, but I thought it was great.
I won't recommend this one; too many people don't like it. But I'm going to appreciate it. Just a little bit.
