JFK

Fact or Fiction? Either way, one hell of a film!

I am not a conspiracy theorist, nor do I necessarily buy all of what director Oliver Stone tries to persuade his audience to believe, but that doesn't stop JFK from being incredibly fascinating and surprisingly entertaining. At 206 minutes, the director's cut fleshes out so many facets to the mind boggling case that lone wolf crusading district attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner, in an astute performance) tries to build and present to a court of law (the only case ever brought to trial involving the assassination of JFK). With the pitch-perfect casting of key characters like Lee Harvey Oswald (Gary Oldman, disappearing completely in the role), and X (Donald Sutherland, crafty as ever in what most would turn into a thankless performance) Stone has compiled a suave, detailed and completely arresting motion picture regardless what is fact and what is fiction; phenomenal editing, smooth camerawork and bold writing all contribute to the best American film of 1991. Final Grade: A+
