Gloomy and depressing

Bare-boned story of a poor adolescent who endures all sorts of atrocities: a drunken father, a dying mother, a rape, etc. Nadine Nortier is compelling, but there doesn't seem to be a point and the ending is much too ambiguous. Final Grade: C+
