This is the story of two brothers, Joe (Brad Pitt) and Billy Maloney (Rick Schroder) attending different high schools because the delinquent Billy has caused too much trouble in previous ones. Joe is an all-star runner on his high school track team trying for a scholarship at Stanford University by running a faster pace than anyone else. Trying to be a good older brother, Joe asks Billy if he wants to run with him in the mornings before school. Billy gives it a shot, and much to everyone's surprise beats the star athlete. The brothers eventually face-off against each other on opposing schools.
