The small town sheriff in charge of a community comprising of New York cops and their families has to choose between loyalty to his fellow officers and justice when a young detective's life is threatened by corrupt colleagues. At the time Cop Land was touted as Sylvester Stallone's foray into serious acting and although he is merely channelling Rocky Balboa with a badge, he acquits himself quite well. But it is the excellent supporting cast that makes the film work, including heavy weights of crime drama Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel and the pick of the bunch Ray Liotta whose crisis of conscience is pivotal to the story. On the down side, Cop Land does not quite have the dramatic gravitas suggested by the all star cast and the finale is something of an anti-climax but it's a solidly made, strongly performed cop drama that alongside First Blood and Rocky is easily one of Stallone's best moments.
