The Conjuring

A Scary, Intense Horror Movie

"The Conjuring" is intense and often scary. It is also expertly made and executed. While the violence never gets too gory, the movie is so scary that it really does not matter. What makes the movie work, more than the scares, however, is the fact that all of the characters are well developed and sympathetic, and there is some real emotional impact here. Part of this emotional impact is due to some just terrific acting by everyone across the board. Special kudos to Lili Taylor and Vera Farmiga, who both deserve best supporting actress Oscar nominations. The director, James Wan, has to get the credit for the rest. I found Wan's last movie, Insidious, to be flawed and not scary at all. Here, he does a slam bang job of delivering a very old school horror movie that delivers plenty of chills and thrills. A must see for horror fans.
