Ghostbusters (1984)

Tell Him About The Twinkie

This is a timeless classic in cinema. I say this about many movies; and I find they are all usually from the 80's and early 90's;...but they just don't make movies like these anymore. These days, I think filmmakers try too hard.

In this movie you have a group of guys who end up losing their grant with a local university; therefore forcing them to go into business for themselves. Fortunately, they had gathered enough data during their time with the university to have the capabilities to catch, capture and contain any ghosts that happen to appear.

Enter the heroine of the story, Dana (played by Sigourney Weaver); who believes her apartment is haunted because eggs were cooking on the counter and there was a "dog" in her fridge.

Do we have the beginning of a deep plot developing here??

Finally, the guys get their first call for their first official catch and capture on an official ghost. This results in one of the best scenes in the movie stretching from when they enter the hotel to when they leave it.

We have an origin story!!! And we're not even half-way through the movie.

It all comes down to a couple demons (Gozer and Zull) plan to reek the end of days on the world and release all the captures ghostly friends in the Ghostbuster's containment unit.

Some montages, a run in with the EPA, going to jail, and fighting off a giant marshmallow man completes this iconic movie in a complete beginning, plot build-up, plot climax, and ending.

Played by a great cast, original idea which was executed incredibly well, great one-liners. This movie has it all and never disappoints.

As I was just watching this last night I began to think about this film as I do a lot of my other favorites from the 80's and early 90's. what would this movie look like if it were made today; with all the advancements we've made today. We are in the era of re-makes. Would they ever re-make this movie?

I'm not saying I want them to, but I often wonder all the different places they could bring it.

Dare I say even try and pull a Ghostbusters: The Next Generation type of thing. Cheesy yes, but if it had a great script I think it could be pulled off......though......I think that's the biggest problem; actually having something that would be a good script and not get fouled up by the many minds with their hands in the cookie jar.

They don't write movies like this anymore. And that is truly a shame for present day film.
