Australia (2008)

Australia is Amazing, this Movie is Not

I was expecting this to be the country of Australia's "Giant" which stars Bogart, Dean, and Taylor. Though I didn't give that movie a high rating I attribute it's lack of quality due to the evolution of time. Well, Australia just came out and it doesn't even stand the test of time. I was very disappointed in this flick.

The Good: The acting - both Kidman and Jackman are great as usual. The child actor is actually pretty good as well. The cinematography is amazing at times, but at others, the CGI is terrible (I think). It is a beautiful country from what I can see and really does depict what Australia could have been like (though it definitely could have been better). The story is actually OK though extremely cheesy at times. Still it is an epic movie and does and I wouldn't classify it other than that.

The Bad: Did Disney do this? It seemed like a rated G movie. There was no edge to it. It was also way to over dramatic at times. I found myself closing my eyes in embarrassment at times. The story was decent enough but because of the cheese factor it truly brought it down. It just didn't do enough for me to think it was good. Much like Pearl Harbor, it had several places where the movie could have ended. Like most epics, this movie could have been broken up into a couple flicks. Thankfully they kept this all in one mess though.

Don't see this movie unless you love Australia, love overblown epics, and can stand large amounts of cheese. Not good, but not bad.

Australia Review comment

I never had high hopes for this one - I'll probably catch it on cable sometime in the distant future.
