So I stumble on an article today about digital movies and how it is impossible to print 35 mm movies anymore. I personally think that  by losing the 35mm we lose a chunk of important filmmaking techniques. What do you guys think?http://www.theatlan hive/2012/11/with-35mm-fi lm-dead-will-classic-movi es-ever-look-the-same-aga in/265184/#.ULFmbm60TP0.f acebook 11/24/2012

A really interesting read - everyone is always in such a rush to embrace new technology, they forget how much is invested in the original technology. It's kind of frightening really - I think of a future in which the best possible copy of a film isn't digital, isn't 35mm - it's someone's old copy of VHS taped off TV because the original film wasn't preserved and a digital copy never made (or, mayhap lost when the hard drive crashed).

As someone who is in charge of entering all the movie requests, it's really heart-breaking to know just how many film have been lost over the course of history - and not just early cinema - according to Wikipedia (which is right about everything... usually?) half of all sound film from 1927-1950 are considered lost.

If we're not careful with how we decide to take care of film, I fear that list could grow much longer.
