I won't be covering the red carpet, but I will be updating the winners as they are announced tonight along with commenting on the show itself (hopefully Billy Crystal can save the day!)

Feel free to chime in with comments if you're watching (or feel free to add them afterwards as well).

No one can open the awards like Crystal - both the intro and the songs. He knows how to have good time and it shows. You can keep your hip young hosts, it just can't match this opening. 02/26/2012

The first award of the night for cinematography goes to:

Hugo

The film is nominated for the most award of the night and could easily take home more statues. It looks like it might be a shootout between this and The Artist for most awards.

Award number two, Art Direction goes to:

Hugo

Make it two for two for Martin Scorcese's whimsical film. I haven't seen it yet, though I'm sure it will be up next on Netflix.

Number three - Costume Design goes to:

The Artist

The first award of the night for the silent black & white film that has to be the favorite for Best Picture. Interesting that best costume goes to the only film where it's hardest to appreciate them but, hey, that's just me.

Fourth award - Best Makeup goes to:

The Iron Lady

For making Meryl Streep look slightly older! No - really, when you're doing a biopic, you have to get the look right and I would say, if nothing else, she certainly looked the part for Margaret Thatcher.

Well if actors can do it, so can I.  Although my parents tell me the first film I saw was a Disney film, the first film I can remember watching was Gremlins - as I know it now, a great horror/comedy in turns dark and humorous. What I remember? When that gremlin pops out of that medical box, I think I jumped about ten feet. I think this film is the reason I like horror films so much today - it's fun to be scared. 02/26/2012

Our fifth award award of the night for Best Foreign Film goes to:

A Separation (Iran)

This had to been seen as the favorite going into the night. Not surprising given the Golden Golds speech, the thank you got a bit political but he should be given the chance to speak his mind. A very worthwhile win.

Out sixth award and first acting one of the night for Best Supporting Actress goes to:

Octavia Spencer for The Help

Was the favorite going into the night did not disappoint. One of the films I have seen going into the awards, Spencer did give a great performance and that's the kind of emotional reaction everyone should have.
