For all you horror movie buffs out there, this coming October 10th will see the release of Quarantine, which, if you've seen the trailer, looks like it will be a pretty good Halloween time release.

However, what many people may not know is that Quarantine is a remake of a creepy, low-budget Spanish film called REC. However, Americans will not be able to see REC (legally) until AFTER Quarantine has been released and ran its course.

It's a shrewd marketing mood, but will it really help? From past experiences with remakes (mainly American vs. J-horror) the original is almost always the better film. Do the filmmakers really thing if REC had been released that it would have hurt business? I can see no releasing it in theaters, but they could have at least given us a DVD.  I, for one, would have liked to see the original first, then seen if America could top it.

err.. .this topic angers me. I have never heard of it and I AM a horror buff. I don't care for j-horror movies though. I love The Ring and didn't care for Ringu and didn't like any of the grudges. Dark water I believe is from japan originally as well, it was downright terrible -- however I did not see the original of this movie, but the story was so crappy I doubt it was good. 09/23/2008

I quite enjoyed [REC], though the run to the thrills takes some patience. I did enjoy it far more than the U.S. remake- this is one of those flicks that actually benefits from the low-budget simplicity as it enhances the "real" life" occurrence factor. 10/16/2008

I just watched them both again and, in my opinion, [REC] is sooooo much better =) 10/20/2008
