I'm just curious how fellow members rate the movies they have seen.  What is the basis for giving high, decent or low ratings?  Actors/Actresses involved? Plot/story? Sound track? Location/cinematography? Is it personal choice?  Other factors for you?

Thanks. :-)

Here's my personal take:

4 Stars - Has to be a movie that's not only technically brilliant, but more importantly, personally connect with me on some emotional level. Whether it's characters or story, it can be a brilliant film, but if it doesn't move me, it won't get to that 4th star.

3.5 - A great film with either a flaw I can't overlook or one that I can't quite connect with personally.

3.0 - This is where I admit a lot of films wind up (or 2.5). If you see a 3.0 it means I would recommend watching this whether you're a fan of the genre or not. A good, Solid choice.

2.5 - This is a film I would still recommend, but only if you're in the mood for that particular genre (be it horror, drama, western, etc.). One I would say to rent rather than go to theaters. Even though 2.0 is technically the "average" 2.5 is my average.

2.0 - A mediocre film for the genre or people involved. Too many flaws be it in lack of plot, character development or other technical aspects. Only watch if you are bored or really like this particular genre.

1.5 - I don't hand out many of these. Usually if it's bad enough to be a 1.5, it's bad enough to be a 1. Even if you like a particular genre, director or actor, seriously question watching this unless you are a completionist.

1.0 - Really, don't bother. These are the kind of films I regret watching - something went terribly wrong usually story stinks, actors stink and it either puts me to sleep or makes me groan at its stupidity. Still, there is some small spark that makes this just a step up from an utter waste.

.5 - Reserved for the worst of the worst - I rarely give these out because I can usually find SOMEthing positive - usually, not always. These films offend me with their very existence - enough said.

This is how I rank them...
4 - This is a great movie.  One that I feel is flawless, or almost near it.  It's well done in all aspects and I thoroughly enjoyed it in some way.  One that I may watch many times over.

3.5 - A great movie that I enjoyed quite a bit, but is lacking that something that would make it worth a 4.

3 - A solid movie.  Maybe some flaws, but not enough to dampen the entertainment quality of the film.  One that I would recommend.

2.5 - Average.  Maybe not to original, or good in all aspects, but still has some reasons worth watching.

2 - Slightly below average.  One where the good outweighs the bad, but not enough to at least recommend a watch for someone who is really interested.

1.5 - Not a good movie.  There are moments, or scenes that make it feel like it's not a waste of time, but overall it's poor.

1 - Bad.  Barely any one good thing worth mentioning.  It's not the worst I've seen, but that's not saying much.

0.5 - HORRIBLE.  Stay away.  Don't even think about watching it.  Complete and utter waste of anyone's time.

4 Stars – If the movie made any type of impact after viewing it. Everything was perfect like the method of storytelling, plot, character build-up, wardrobe, scenery, artists’ performance, direction and musical score. The film can be for repeat viewings and is culturally known worldwide. The reality is lifelike or if it has special effects, is very genuine. A must have in every DVD collection with the great special features (or even without it). This is truly a classic in every sense.

3.5 Stars – A classic in its own right, but lacks some of the factors that make it great/believable. Highly recommended and has great parts. Special features should be awesome (may also be a standalone film without it). This may have some impact after viewing. This film can be for numerous viewings as well. Still a great movie and glorious addition to your DVD collection.

3.0 Stars – A recommended film but lack certain elements to make it great. You were still affected by the film. Special features may have an affect, but not necessary. Have good elements of a film that make it great so you include it in your DVD collection.

2.5 Stars – A decent film that you can enjoy partially.  Neither good nor bad and is still watchable.  This can still be part of your DVD collection if you feel like watching it again.  May or may have special features.  Maybe recommended depending on your mood.

2.0 Stars – A movie that may pass certain standards, but not as part of your DVD collection. You might like it because of the special features that influenced you to enjoy the film more.  So many things wrong in the elements that could have made it a good film.

1.5 Stars – Not a good movie.  It could be forced to be part of your DVD collection.  It may or may have reliable special feature that’s why you got it.

1.0 Star – A bad movie. Not to be part of any DVD collection unless it was a gift.  Close to being trash.

.5 Star – Definitely avoid this horrendous type of films.  Pure regret you purchased or watched it in the beginning.  If you have a DVD copy, smash it with a hammer until its memories are forgotten.  Flush it in the toilet after it becomes scraps too.  Nobody will even care if it has special features.
