Over the years I have noticed that people are using the quote "Hollywood is out of ideas" and that is mostly due to the desire Hollywood has to create sequels or more recently reboots of popular movies. While there are many movies that I have no real desire to see a sequel to, I do find that there are a lot of movies that are highly underrated... mostly because they weren't made to cater to the mainstream audience, or because people too the movie the wrong way.
So I ask you what movies do you think are/were truely underrated and why?

American Psycho - Underrated because most people that saw it never read the book and thought "I want to see a thriller/horror movie" and then they hated the movie because they didn't get it that the movie is neither, it is in reality a dark comedy.

Ronin - The movie didn't do great in the theaters because people expected so much from it. Because you have no idea what is in the case that they are going after it drove most people crazy. A personal favorite in action flicks.

Death to Smoochy - I know a lot of people that couldn't stand this movie because they a) Didn't like Edward Norton playing this kind of character.  b) Are fed up with Robin Williams  c) Just didn't get it. This was one film that I wasn't a huge fan of the first time I saw it, but after the 2nd & 3rd time I really began to enjoy it.

So what films do you find to be underrated?

Definitely agree with Ronin (with having one of the best car chases on screen) and Ed Wood.

I'd like to add:
1. Seabiscuit: Well-acted, very uplifting and great story telling.
2. Grosse Point Blank: A dark romantic comedy with a stellar cast.  Amazing soundtrack and action.
3. Donnie Brasco: A nice true to life film that didn't get enough recognition despite the solid performances.
4. The Prestige: Mesmerizing from beginning to the end of the film.  For repeat viewings.
5. Infernal Affairs: Well-crafted mystery film that deserves more attention.
6. Requiem for a Dream: Not much written about the film. Superb acting with a great message.
7. The Big Lebowski: Huge cult film that is for repeat viewings.
8. Donnie Darko: Another imaginative cult film.
