The first Star Wars spinoff film has been announced with a release date of Dec. 16, 2016. Not much is known at this point other than Gareth Edwards (Monsters, the recent Godzilla reboot) is directing and that Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) has been cast.
It will also be the first film in the Star Wars canon not to be scored by John Williams, as Alexandre Desplat (who just won an Academy Award for his score in The Grand Budapest Hotel) will be composing the music. While I will certainly miss Williams, Desplat seems like a solid choice - as he has provided some big dramatic scores - including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2, Argo, The Queen, Zero Dark Thirty, Godzilla and this year's Imitation Game and Unbroken.
Some concept art has been released, but the story is still a mystery other than it seems to involve more of the rank and file soldiers as opposed to Boba Fett or a young Han Solo (as was rumored) - still, we'll see how this turns out, but color me intrigued. |
