This movie has been in development hell since, well, probably since I first read this book back in 2000. I got into this a lot later than most people (while I was in college) and can see why it's been such a hot property.

Although the March 2013 release date is a ways off, initial casting for the lead roles look promising. Hugo's Asa Butterfield has been cast as Ender and, hopefully this comes to pass, Hailee Steinfeld (who was amazing in her breakout role in True Grit) is up for Petra. There was also talks about Harrison Ford playing Col. Graff, but that is of yet unconfirmed.

For those not in the know, Ender's Game is about a group of gifted children sent to a space station in order to train both minds and bodies in order to prevent an alien invasion that could wipe out the Earth. These children are pitted against one another, and while the initial challenges seem easy, as it goes on the training gets much more complex and the pressure continues to build - for a book aimed at teens, it really has some excellent character development and a much deeper story than what is presented on the surface.

If done right, this should be a sure-fire hit, but adapting literary material - especially popular series - is dangerous. Harry Potter may have been a smash, but then you have something like Golden Compass or His Dark Materials, which failed.

I'll have a while to wait, but I'm going to be keeping a close watch on how this develops.

It seems all of my friends read the book in middle/high school.  I was the only one that didn't, but I believe now that I missed out.  I'll give it a read. 12/02/2011

If I'm talking about sci-fi - it's my second-favorite book after Dune (don't tackle that unless you want something much more dense). It's a quick read too - seeing as it's aimed at the high school crowd, but don't let that fool you, it's worth your time. 12/02/2011

If this does end up getting made I will be the first one in line to be disappointed. LOL Love the book I have read it probably 8 or 10 times. It is my next favourite  book after the Harry Potter books. 02/03/2012

Initial cast looks great -

Harrison Ford - Col. Graff
Ben Kingsley - Mazer Rackham
Asa Butterfield - Ender Wiggin
Abigail Breslin - Valentine Wiggin
Hailee Steinfeld - Petra Arkanian

Viola Davis was also recently announced for a supporting role.

Just based on the cast alone, it will be worth watching.

I like the actors in it but I don;t think there is any way they can make the battle room scenes as cool as they are in my head. 02/04/2012

I agree 100%. I can count on one hand the number of films that are as good as the book. Still, I want to have faith they are going to do this one justice. 02/04/2012

Haven't heard of it or read the book. If it is Sci-fi I will definitely  ;be interested. The fact that it doesn't come out for a whole 'nother year is a bit odd. I hope the production value is high.  02/05/2012

I can't believe  you never read this Alex? It is worth the $5 to pick it up it is a really fun read. They have been talking about making this movie for like 15 years so that it is only a year away is amazing.  02/06/2012
