I'm so with you, never in my wildest imaginations would I have pictured Tom Cruise as "Reacher". Who would you have picked? |

I've never read the books the movie is based on, but just a quick glance at Wikipedia, I'm picturing a stoic, muscular guy - maybe Bruce Willis (though he's a little older than the character) or Liam Neesan. |

If you like the genre, Lee Childs books are some of the best. My favorite though is James Hall. Your picks are on target, except for age as you mentioned. I've been a fan from his first book and have often tried to find a Reacher, tall, big and blonde. I thought Gerald Butler with a bleach job, a young Clint. Alexander Skarsgard from True Blood, though he might be too young. I've got the perfect guy for James Hall's hero, Thorn, Owen Wilson. Sorry, I can go on, but these are a coupla' my fav authors, |

People get really up-in-arms about casting for popular books - the more popular, the more scrutinized (The Hunger Games being a fantastic example of fan fervor over casting). That being said, Tom Cruise might not be the right fit, but he may still do the part justice. But I agree, Butler sounds like a by and far better choice. |

Honestly, I must admit that I'm thrilled that you've replied to my comments. I have been on a few of these sites and usually my trivial comments have been ignored, so thank you.
And I learned the lesson never invest too much in an author's description after the inspired casting of Richard Dreyfuss as the oceanographer in "Jaws". Such a complete opposite of the book's character but so much better! It's just, after what? 'bout 10 books, you definitely get a pic in your head of the main character.
I read and watch too many TV and films!

No problem - as long as there are interesting topics on hand, I'll always reply - maybe not immediately, but I'll be back at some point.
Probably the two biggest book-to-film adaptations on my radar are Ender's Game (which has been in development hell forever, but is finally getting done) - and just from the casting alone I'm excited.
And
World War Z - Which has been delayed, and is now being extensively re-written, on top of which is apparently shaping up to be nothing like the book, which has me a bit nervous because the book is absolutely terrific. Still, zombies and all, so I'll probably end up watching it.
As far as casting from the books goes, I would have never pictured Rooney Mara to be picked to play Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but she turned out to be a surprisingly effective actress for the part. Hopefully the other two end up being made. |

See, I watched the originals and after seeing her in Sherlock Holmes, I don't understand why they didn't cast Naoomi Rapace, guess her accent was too strong! But I loved Daniel Craig, thought he was much better than the original actor(his name escapes me). But I think Craig is underarrated since watching Layer Cake. I rarely watch a movie twice so if the story is not much different than the book or original movie, I'll probably skip it. Yes, the whole series is good, hope they finish.
So you haven't read any James Hall's, how 'bout Tim Dorsey and his hero, Serge? Kevin Kline would be perfect as Serge. Or mostly, a sci-fi fan? Jacqueline Carey books are not really sci-fi, but a different world sorta like Game of Thrones, but the heroine is so awesome-pain physically turns her on! But she goes on to save the day! |

I admit, my reading library is pretty limited - Stephen King, Chuck Palahniuk, The Wheel of Time series, H.P. Lovecraft, Dune Series (original - the new stuff, which I've read, is pretty bad), Star Wars (I'm still a huge fan after all these years), lots of graphic novels (particularly The Walking Dead, Fables, Locke and Key), occasionally a "classic" novel - you know Dickens or Steinbeck. Also zombies - I have an unhealthy fascination with them.
I admit I'm a sucker for anything currently popular, which is why I've read Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Millenium Trilogy and am currently making my way through The Game of Thrones series. I won't touch that Twilight stuff, though - no way.
Thinking on books being made into movies, I have to say Ender's Game has me intrigued - that's a good sci-fi series too. I wish I had more time to read - I get in a few hours a week but certainly not as much time as I used to. |

Yes, love Zombies, also. The whole genre is one of my favs, but I'm probably, how did you put it?, my "unhealthy fascination" is serial killers, Dexter, of 'course being a fav. Probably Thomas Harris' "Red Dragon" hooked me. Great book, and second movie, first was terribly mishandled by Michael Mann. See, my biggest pet peeve with supernatural movies and such, is which rules will they follow now? Sunlight kill vamps, oh no, not in this one, or Zombies-fast or slow? Guess I'm too pragmatic-especially with tv shows, where one week they use something off-the-wall as a solution, and in another show-the same sort of weird problem happens and they forget that other solution or whatever. Do you know what I'm trying to get across? 'Course it happens on "regular" cop and crime shows, too, but by then I'm just watching with one eye and reading with the other. What do you think? |
