The idea of a villain origin story is intriguing. I don't think they'll touch the Joker, if only because Heath Ledger's portrayal is still the high mark of the series and his death is still fresh in the minds of people. Nolan wouldn't even mention the Joker in Dark Knight Rises out of respect, I can't imagine someone taking on that role.Still, I like this idea much more than just another origin story. I've also heard they might try to develop a Catwoman spin-off, but that's just rumor at this point.

Yes, a villain origin story would be tremendous if done properly. Even though it would be difficult to find an actor that could compare to Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson even, a Joker origin story could be great. Or how about a less creepy Penguin origin, except without the growing up in the sewer because that is so ridiculous I can't even wrap my head around it.

Well, the reboot could give us an origin story. It would be completely separate from this trilogy (though my guess is that Nolan would produce), so it could give us the origin story all over again. I just don't think it's likely. If I were in charge of the reboot, I would do it with a movie that focuses completely on the origin story of a villain. I'd keep who the next Batman is a secret until it came out, then I'd only give a glimpse of him at the end.

Whatever happens, the reboot can't give us another Batman origin story because Batman Begins already gave us the origin. I'd love to see a reboot focus on a villain a little bit more, where Batman is already intrenched in Gotham and a new villain, perhaps the Penguin or Riddler comes in.

I think a reboot will happen within two years. And I feel that's probably a bit conservative. I think they'll have a director within a year after The Dark Knight Rises is released. I'm not sure we'll get another Batman origin story, though. I think the next reboot would start a bit after that.

I predict we will see a Batman reboot within the next five years - I don't want to even speculate on directors/actors at this point, but it will happen. The super hero genre is still hot, and Batman is just too lucrative to pass up. Though if the whole Justice League movie rumors are true, they may tie up the next incarnation into that franchise - but it's all wishful thinking at this point. But I agree, it's hard to imagine a future Batman with anywhere near the impact that Nolan and Bale have brought to the table.

I reply to Christopher and who will take over after Nolan. I would hope and pray no one. Let the series sit for another ten or fifteen year s then try again. Anything done by anyone else will be a disappointment in the near future.
