"Stronger" hits the emotional and inspirational targets you'd expect it to, but highlights its character's struggle without coating itself in typical crowd-pleasing sap.

In this glossy biographical drama, Jake Gyllenhaal doesn't slouch in the role of Jeff Bauman. nor do his costars Miranda Richardson or Tatiana Maslany. Richardson especially is unrecognizable as his hard drinking controlling mother. While its unflattering portrayal of most of the characters is admirable in how unflinching it can be, it also makes for a dreary sit.
