This film was virtually remade as El Dorado, even to the point of recasting crotchety old cowpoke Walter Brennan in the same role. That was played more broadly and for laughs, but each version has merit. And Dean Martin (unsurprisingly!) plays a very believable drunk...

If you had to rank John Wayne's films, Rio Bravo would definitely rank near the top (but not better than The Searchers). The plot is fairly standard but Wayne is in top form, and he's joined by great supporting turns from Dean Martin, Angie Dickinson, and Ricky Nelson. My only gripe is that the romance between Wayne and Dickinson blossoms into love practically overnight, but regardless, the rest of the action is solid.

One of John Wayne's best westerns. It's just plain fun.

A pretty standard Western plot is made riveting by an all-star cast. John Wayne and Dean Martin are equally commanding as the leads, but Walter Brennan, as a stuttering old cowboy, steals nearly every scene he is in. Of course, the film showcases Martin and co-star Ricky Nelson's fantastic singing, as well.

A solid western that is actually very similar to to Rio Grande (in name and content). Wayne is exceptional and Martin is impressive as well. If you are a true western fan, you should have already seen this one. Recommended to all.
