Far more witty and subtle than the increasingly ham-fisted sequels and ill advised remakes, this is a pleasing caper movie, all the better for the presence of the debonair David Niven. |

While, not quite the goofy Clouseau centered farce that the series developed into, it's still full of clever moments, crazy mixups and some solid slapstick. Good crime comedy. |

Some of the absurdist humor in this slapstick comedy wouldn't work if it weren't for the perfect comic timing and characterization of Peter Sellers. The man truly was a comic genius. The bumbling Inspector Clousseau is a memorable part of film canon; the two remakes this film spawned, not so much. |

The film has a problem and that is simply not enough Sellers. When he is on the screen the movie lights up because he is very funny even though he is not yet using the trademark over the top accent. He is great in all his scenes, and makes those scenes work. No one else is particularly funny and they many times try to act a little too zany, which does not work out nearly well enough. It is clear why in the sequels they dropped every one else and kept Sellers. |
