This film is light-hearted and entertaining. I liked seeing Scarlet Johansson show some depth. It seems like every film she's in she's playing a vixen. Here, she was enjoyable to watch. Actually, the whole movie was enjoyable. It's obviously not a masterpiece, but it gets the job done. |

A lifeless and uncharismatic dramedy with a very phony sentimental relationship at its core (between Johansson and the child, whom we never really get to know or like); Giamatti and especially Linney overplay the upscale, neglectful parents and turn in rather hateful performances. Scarlett would be deserved of some sympathy if it didn't take her the entire length of the movie to finally stand up for herself. There's also the expected meet cute romantic angle for the heroine, and when all is done, we realize we never cared for any of these people. Blah! Final Grade: C-

Light and Enjoyable |

A friend of mine read the book and was disappointed after watching this film. I didn't read the book but I enjoyed it a lot. I guess it's because I finally found a movie where I liked Scartlett Johansson and Chris Evans from beginning to end. Usually, I hate watching them on film because Johansson can get really annoying ("Match Point") and Evans tends to play the same character over and over ("Fantastic Four," "Fierce People,"Sunshine," shall I go on?). But this time, both are really charismatic and I cared about what would happen to them. I bought all the attachments that started and evolved... and some that had to be broken. Laura Linney is always a joy to watch, but I was kind of disappointed with Paul Giamatti. Out of all the characters, he seemed the most one-dimensional. Still, it'... |
