Decent adventure film for the family that boasts some fun and impressive 3-D.

There's sort of a zany fun in this adventure film. Yes, it bends the rules of science and is utterly ridiculous, but there's a sort of careless energy to the ridiculousness. I'm sure it was much better in 3-D. The huge hangup, though, is the effects. They are horrific - the most painfully obvious green-screen and CGI work in years.

I did not see the 3-D version, but the standard version is a pretty average action/adventure fare aimed at the younger crowd. Brendan Fraser plays the same average hero, the visuals are pretty good the story only OK. Decent watch.

The writing of this movie was pretty bad. The dialogue was stilted and irritating and the whole movie pretty much spits in the face of science. It was fairly exciting though and the visuals were pretty neat (even if they didn't really look that believable who doesn't like glowing birds and sea monsters?) Most of the excitement and interesting pieces came from Verne. The execution and narrative thread really weren't compelling or well done at all. Probably not worth seeing but it was ok.

Pretty Entertaining

I almost gave this a two stars out of four because there were moments where I thought it diverged too much from the adventure and focused a little bit too much on lame/unnecessary character development. With a family-friendly summer blockbuster film, one expects breath-taking action sequences right after another instead of a forced attempt of sentimentality. Still, I decided to give this film three stars because there were some truly memorable scenes such as the mine ride, the cave of crystals, the T-Rex, and the geyser. Brendan Fraser, like in “The Mummy” films, is really likeable as a scientist whose lab is about to be shut down; Josh Hutcherson continues his role as a kid who’s a little bit sarcastic but often keeps something up his sleeves; Anita Briem is also a neat addition because ...

Simply adventurous

I was a bit skeptical when I first saw the preview for this remake. But then it turned out to be something worth my time. The simplicity of the story and characters is such an unexpected treat to watch. I wasn’t wowed and all but it was overall a nice surprise. Brendan Fraser does nothing special and his role here is pretty similar to every other roles he does including the Rick O’Connell character he’s best known for. Also I noticed there are a lot of references from the Mummy movies you just have to have a keen eye to see it. The kid character is a bit of a bad actor but I guess who can blame him he’s just a kid. Anita Briem is exceptionally beautiful and I really do hope this would jumpstart her career to stardom. It’s a bit sad because there are a lot of big named summer blockbusters ...
