A spotty but unique satire, "The Hudsucker Proxy" fills in its uneven gaps with its slick visual style and fiery spirit.

Not the most intricate or thematically deep Coen Brothers film, but one of their more memorably visual ones. Of course, there are the requisite screwball comedy moments and weird and wonderful characters. I have a soft spot for the film that others seem not to have.

Like so many Coen films, Hudsucker Proxy is unique and people will probably either love it or hate it. I find it refreshing in its mix of business, journalism and surrealism.

Jennifer Jason Leigh bulldozes her way through her scenes impersonating Katherine Hepburn impersonating Lois Lane and Tim Robbins makes a likeable enough boob, but the real show stealer is Paul Newman's corporate shark who was clearly an influence on J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spiderman films and he electrifies the screen every time he appears. Unfortunately, plot is a little thin on the ground …
