I bought this film without first knowing anything about it (besides the director and actors) and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I liked the two main characters and their relationship very much and I thought the scenes that switched between reality and the girls imagination were done fairly good. The ending scene is quite effective, with it's tense set-up and sad conclusion.

This movie represents a few first: Kate Winslet's first film and Peter Jackson's first serious film (following Dead/Alive, Bad Taste). It is a good indication of things to come - at times dark, at time disturbing (those clay people are just creepy) and, scarier still, based on true events. Excellent debuts all around, even if a bit depressing.

What a wholly unpleasant movie. i can't fault the skill of it, because the performances are solid and the way director Peter Jackson blends fantasy with reality as an examination of the girls' psychoses is interesting. However, none of the characters are likable and you really feel no sympathy for anyone in the film, which, to me, made it hard to care about the conclusion. I was just...disturbed. But, then again, it's a sad and unpleasant story, so maybe that was the intended effect, in which case, the movie is successful.

Great acting by Kate Winslet in her first film.
