Quick Movie Reviews

Rating of

One of Howard Hawks' best and most enjoyable movies, 'HATARI!' details the adventures of a game preserve in Africa where John Wayne leads safaris to wrangle wild animals for zoos overseas. The international cast includes Red Buttons, Hardy Kruger, Elsa Martinelli, Gerard Blain, and veteran actor Bruce Cabot. The mood is light and frivolous while the standout element remains the exciting action scenes. Apparently, Hawks made the cast members capture the live wild animals by themselves just as seen onscreen. The result is something that will not ever again be captured on film. The East African backdrop looks beautiful as well and the score is nice too.

Maybe it's the unbelievably patronising and racist attitude towards the local population. Maybe it's the fact that the whole experience revolves around cruelty to/butchery of animals. Maybe it's the dim-witted machismo and misogyny of the entire genre. But I really HATE safari films...
