Darren Aronofsky's trippy romantic drama traverses different timelines and even different genres. It's ambitious and there's some cool visual effects work to appreciate. The acting is strong on the part of Jackman and Weisz. But the overlapping plots do not always mesh as well as they should. It's one of those times you wish the movie was longer to flesh things out better.

'The Fountain' is a hard one to describe. It's best left to be experienced by the viewer. The unique thing about that is every single person will have a different reaction to this film. The way in which the three areas of the story combine through remarkable visuals and extremely emotional music is something to be admired. These facets present profound ideas about life, love, and death. The messages integrated into the story are open to interpretation. The more you bring to it, the greater an emotional effect it will have on you. It's not often a film manages to be this entertaining, bold, intellectual, and immensely moving all at once.

Mal angenommen, The Fountain sei ambitionierter Unfug - dann würde der Film doch passend sein zu seinem Sujet: The Fountain handelt vom ewigen Leben. Darren Aronofsky hat sich dafür entschiedenen, seinen Film auf drei verschiedenen Erzählebenen zugleich anzulegen. Er wählt dafür drei ganz unterschiedliche Richtungen, die anders als vorige solcher Experimente nicht zwingend auf denselben Kern zurückzuführen sind. Man hat Aronofskys Werk dafür auf den Filmfestivals verlacht und als dümmlich bezeichnet. Das ist leicht, denn The Fountain hat eine ganz hervorragende Qualität: Es ist ein Werk von grosser Ernsthaftigkeit! Symbolism at its most incredible.

They say this is a 'love it or hate it' type of movie… Well, I guess I love it.

This film seems to focus on the aspects of life and death a lot. The way I understood it, the tree in the mysterious round force field shape symbolizes life (tree of life) and the dying star the couple sees and the Mayans astonish is supposed to represent death.
This film is filled with little easter eggs of mysteriousness that are absolutely beautifully directed by a visionary talent Darren Aronofsky, especially through his macro photography.
Hugh Jackman as three versions of Tom is amazing. He has proven himself to be a great dramatic actor, and his efforts here exceed any others I've seen from him.
Rachel Weisz was good as his wife/queen; she was mainly there for Jackman to have someone to bounce …

A surgeon desperately searches for a cure for his wife's cancer while absorbing himself into the world represented by her final novel. Darren Aronofsky is nothing if not brave and once again willingly sacrifices mainstream acceptability to realise his vision. Similar in format to 2046 in that fantasy and reality are happening in parallel on screen, The Fountain is a representation of his musings on mortality, love and loss and coming to terms with personal grief. It is a truly stunning film to look at with an appropriately beautiful score, complimented nicely by a surprisingly sensitive performance by Hugh Jackman. I'm sure some may dismiss the script as a load of pretentious claptrap, but I personally found it both visually and aurally enchanting as well as deeply moving. However you …
