Gorgeous and thoughtful black-and-white cinematography, a stunner of a supporting actress performance, and an unflinching look at Polish culture two decades after World War II. It won the Foreign Language Film Oscar. Fheck out the link below if you want to read the review with still from the film. Highly recommended in this case, as the images are beautiful and haunting.

Es ist eine reine Freude, die Reihe der "Masterpieces of Polish Cinema" auf DVD wieder zu entdecken. Ich habe euch ein paar davon in das Regal an unserer Treppe gestellt und sie wirken wie ein Gruss aus der goldenen Zeit des europäischen Arthaus Kinos in den frühen 60ern. Diese Art von Kino ist 2013 aber nicht tot, sondern lebt wieder auf mit Pawel Pawlikowskis Ida! Wir reisen zurück in das Polen um 1960, in eine ländliche Gegend. Dort steht ein ziemlich abgelegnes Kloster, in dem die 18-jährige Novizin Anna (Agata Trzebuchowska) lebt. Geredet wird hinter den Mauern wenig, weder bei Essen, noch während Annas Arbeit an einer Christusstatue. In ein paar Tagen soll Anna ihr Gelübde ablegen.
